College Student Loses Legs And Is Arrested In Insurance Scam

Insurance fraud is an unfortunate reality in today’s world. People often try to cheat the system to get easy money, while insurance companies work hard to protect their funds. However, a recent incident in Taiwan has taken insurance fraud to a shocking and unusual level.

Meet Chang, a college student who went to extreme lengths to commit insurance fraud. He filed a claim for a staggering $1.3 million, stating that he had lost his legs due to frostbite. According to his story, he was riding his scooter in freezing weather when he developed severe frostbite.

But here’s the twist – it turned out that Chang didn’t actually get frostbite from riding his scooter. Instead, he immersed his feet in a bucket of dry ice for 10 long hours, causing severe frostbite and a loss of feeling below his knees.

Once both of his legs were amputated, Chang wasted no time in going after the eight different insurance policies he had, hoping to collect the full $1.3 million. However, the insurance company quickly became suspicious, especially since he had recently purchased the policies and the claim came in soon after.

As a result, Chang was charged with insurance fraud for falsely claiming that his legs were amputated due to accidental frostbite. When insurance companies suspect fraud, they investigate and gather evidence to expose the truth. In this case, Chang claimed that he was being pursued by gang members, and that was why he resorted to the insurance scam. Interestingly, the person who told him about the gang members was another student from his high school days, with whom he had recently reconnected.

Chang’s attempt to defraud the insurance company has had serious consequences. He is now disabled, losing his legs as a result of his ill-conceived plan. The evidence presented during the trial revealed that he and his classmate had gone together to purchase the dry ice on their scooters. Later, they returned to Chang’s residence, where he was tied to a chair using cable ties. It was then that he subjected his feet to the extreme cold of the dry ice, resulting in severe frostbite and loss of sensation below his knees.

After being rushed to the emergency department at a local hospital, Chang underwent treatment for a week, leading to the unfortunate amputation of both his legs. While he did receive a sum of over $7,000 through his insurance claims, the company refused to pay out any additional money once they discovered that the other insurance policies had been taken out shortly before the claims were made.

This case serves as a stark reminder that insurance fraud not only causes financial loss to insurance companies, but it can also have severe and permanent consequences for the fraudsters themselves. It is important for everyone to remember that honesty and integrity are crucial, even when faced with difficult situations.
